Humus

Humus, hummus, houmous, or hummous are all derived from the same Turkish spelling of the word humus.t25 The root, humus, itself means ‘mashed chick peas,’ but in English commonly refers to ‘earth or soil.’t26 Many English transliterations work, but listing the title as this synonym helps to impart a great lesson. The word humble actually means ‘lowly, or from the ground or humus’ too.t26 And Jesus teaches us that we must be humble. In fact, it is recorded in Genesis that, “the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being” (Genesis 2:7). God created and made us from nothing into something, all by His power. He wants us to know that we are only possible because of Him. Thus, without Him, we are still like dirt, but in Christ, and through His Holy Spirit, we have His life. This is why many verses say things like, “The LORD sustains the humble but casts the wicked to the ground” (Psalm 147:6). Really God is just putting them back in their place so that they remember where they came from. God is rejecting their false pride and actually helping them so that they realize without Him, they could not exist.
God loves those who are humble because then it is Him working through those people and His love in those people that everyone can enjoy. When we work on our own, and pridefully think that we don’t need Him, everyone misses out on His relationship. Jesus says “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:28-29). God’s plan is that we can rest in Him and enjoy Him. This was made possible by Jesus who was truly humble, taking our place on the cross to present Himself to God on our behalf.

Humus is a delightful treat, but is often loaded with sodium in the stores. Thankfully, making it at home is quick and entertaining. Start at least a day in advance though for allowing the chickpeas to soak overnight (use twice the amount of water). The next day, combine the chick peas, lemons, limes, 1 Tbsp of olive oil, 2 Tbsp of cilantro and spices into a blender or food processor. When the humus is thick enough for your liking, dip with some pita bread and recall humus in the Lord as well!

1/2 lb raw chickpeas (garbanzo beans) soaked overnight

1 lemon and lime to taste

1 (+1/2 for garnish) Tbsp olive oil

2 (+1/2 for garnish) Tbsp cilantro

1/8 tsp dried cumin, chilli powder
and paprika for garnish (optional)
